ROLE OF GRAFFITI

THE ROLE OF GRAFFITI IN LATINAMERICA

Graffiti is the expression of artists who want to give a message for the society. In some cases that message could be pacific or violent. There are many expression around this kind of art. In fact, Graffiti is form or way of communication in which you can read the things seeing the pictures. Latin America is a continent which have many graffiti cultures. Now I am going to say some aspect that how countries as Argentina, Colombia, Honduras and Brazil use this form of non-verbal communication.
Argentina
In this country, artists have many freedom to express their imagination on the wall through the streets. Graffiti is not banned in Buenos Aires. Some people can use this non-verbal communication expression as a form to express their disagreement with the local government in a pacific way. They draw many jungles, animals, humans, and other things. Furthermore, graffiti is used to make sightseeing around Buenos Aires and the meaning of each picture or wall is explained to the tourist.

Colombia
Colombia is a country very impacted by the war, drug traffic and terrorism. Bogota is its capital and according to Tom in the reading, he said that is one of the safest cities in Latin America (I do not agree with him) and as a consequences of its violence periods people express their pain and disagreements on the walls, specially the first one.  In many walls around the colonial downtown or important streets in Bogota, you can see pain images that show the non-conformism with the state and claim about the people rights.
Honduras
Honduras is a country which has fought with violence for several years. One artist express the pain of the citizens painting on streets, but this kind of non-verbal communication is considered a crime in Honduras, specifically in its capital, Tegucigalpa. People who paint on street cover their face because they do not want to be discovered by the authorities. And also these painters use nicknames as form to hide from the government. Finally, graffiti is also used as a form to put “propagandas” or slogans on the streets.
 Brazil
Brazil is a country in which has always been present the corruption and other problems. Graffiti art is banned and illegal there. Many visitors each year come to different countries to see the amazing art used on walls.
All the above can be compared with Northern Africa. There are countries as Egypt in which exist problems seems to Latin America, for example corruption, political problems and poverty and the people in these different cultures (Asia and America) protest in different ways, but the main reason is protest against the state. In conclusion, all these kind of expression as Blogs and Graffiti indicate the freedom of expression of each ones.

Bangkok’s Mexican Gansters

It’s very particular how people from another culture imitate customs of Mexico. This phenomenon is a good example to explain culture appropriation. Over the reading we can read that Thais men use the Gangster style using white big shirts, earrings and tattoos. They are not bad people who traffic illegal drugs and also do not want to get control over others territories. They only want to imitate the Mexican’s style as a taste or pleasure.
The governments, corruption and other aspects that we can see in a nation could be the main reason why this people tend to adopt the gangster style and maybe through this way they can express their disagreements with the authorities and politicians.

Between Mexico and Thailand there is a long distance but both countries could have many similarities that make this Thai Men adopt the Mexican Gangster expressions. Asian are reactive people who wait to talk or speak until the end, it’s very important the silence for them. I think that this cultural appropriation only bring good benefit for Thai People.

Racism against Afro-Colombians

It is a reality that afro-people is discriminated in many countries around world. Colombia is one of the countries where afros are discriminated in a high percentage. According to the video the statistics show that many afrocolombians do not have job opportunities and another high number of these ones live in poverty. Colombia has many regions where we can find afrocolombians such as Pacific or Caribe regions. It is sad to listen or watch racism cases in the 21th century. I think that Black people must not be discriminated knowing their past or slavery history. In spite of their past, many afrocolombians have contributed to build a best country and also they have had a noted participation in many fields such as politicians, TV shows and specially sports. It is that one reason why some groups of people have been worked against the social segregation in Colombia. It is a good initiative that could encourage other people and fight against the racism in Colombia.

We have recognize the importance of afrocolombians in Colombia and how they have contributed to build a best country. Their effort and social connection show from where they come. Say NO to Racism.
